Flag - Australia See you later, Australia!
13 January 2000

Well, we finally left Sydney. Managed to fit in a couple of great Sydney memories before we departed - sailed around the Harbour, and went to our first opera, "Fledermaus" by Strauss at the Opera House. On the opening night, no less!

Sad in some ways to move on, but definitely glad to move out of our flat (but when will we ever have a beach outside our front door again?). Over the past week we've been moving south, firstly to Melbourne for 24 hrs (rode some trams, went sightseeing); and then to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road, which was very spectacular. Our trip along the Great Ocean Rd lasted 3 days and was made up of about 25 people, amongst whom was one of Kate's ex-patients from Kings! How about that for a small world?

Now we're in Adelaide, which we leave tomorrow at some ungodly hour. Really like it here, beautiful city, laid back pace of life - well, it has to be given the heat. It is absolutely sweltering, 38°C.

Tomorrow we land in New Zealand, which we'll tour by campervan for 5 weeks. Can't wait! Looking back on our Oz experience, its been the longest we've spent anywhere, and on the whole, great. The only 3 things we'd change would be:

  • to have seen a live Aussie Rules Football match (out of season)
  • to have not met so many Ozzie males from straight out of the dark ages (mustn't generalise but quite a few managed to score fairly highly on unashamed racism and sexism)
  • to have not undergone the Viking experience in our flat!

But hey, its all good! So campers, be seeing you.
