Flag - Uruguay '¡Buenos dias!' (for the LAST time) from Uruguay
7 June 2000

Not much to read in this one (you'll be pleased to know).

Still revelling in the glory of having seen the sexy, sultry tango danced to perfection in the streets of Buenos Aires (how good would it be to be able to dance like that?), we caught an overnight bus to Montevideo.

Uruguay's capital has an old and a new part. The 'charming' Cuidad Vieja may have had more charm in the past, but it is fairly rundown now! A few nice plazas and a sea promenade, but that's about it! As for the 'new' part - nicer architecture, more plazas and nice mercados.

From Montevideo we headed West on our LAST bus journey (sob, sob) to the second biggest town and main seaside resort - Colonia. A more picturesque place with cobbled streets, colonial houses, antique cars (straight out of 'The Waltons') and a pleasant seafront. Being out of season did make that seafront a little cold wet and windy though...again, we don't think we've caught this place at the best time of year! So much for sunbathing on the beaches. We interpreted the drenching we received as an ominous sign for our impending return to the UK.

Not much to report on Uruguayan culture except for incessant maté consumption (tea infusion) and football everywhere (well, they have won the World Cup twice - a little known fact for you).
